Dan,
I notice you have an Irwin Quick Clamp holding the end of the Miter Gauge Bar. Do you have a problem with it trying to lift up out of the slot?

Re: Shopsmith Model 10's What When and Where
Everett, As we know there were many changes to the Model 10's during their production. Other than the 2 Way Tubes being used instead of a single post the Headstock does look and function like a Drill Press and as you point out the prototype used just that. Using off-the-shelf parts where possible wo...

Re: New owner, want to restore
Yes, it looks like the back-up plate can be saved. As long as it is "structurally" sound without deep below surface rust areas and ends up mostly smooth. It looks more like surface rust than deep pitting rust. Use rust remover and clean it up. After it is cleaned up apply paste wax for pro...

Re: SS V bandsaw eccentric tubes coming up short.
I checked my Band Saw with eccentric posts I have that is aligned to my Mark 7. I did not measure the posts but they sit at the same position as yours do in the picture in your second post. As to the change from the straight posts to the eccentric posts I do not know the reason. My 1956 Greenie Band...

Re: I also inherited an old Greenie
The Retractable Casters have always been an optional item for the Mark 5/V. Sometimes included in a package deal. The caster wheels themselves on my restored Mark 5 are replacements. I do not recall when they went from metal caster wheels to hard rubber. These were and still are an option so retract...

Those Under Dog cartoons, unless there are newer ones, were made way back when we didn't know the term PC.

Re: SS V bandsaw eccentric tubes coming up short.
From the picture it looks like it should be okay to use that way. It is still in the upper guide for the post. I just went out and removed a post from one of my Band Saws to measure it. It is 4-5/16" from the eccentric to the top of the post. It is not a Band Saw aligned to any Mark V or Mark 7...

Re: I also inherited an old Greenie
Doing maintenance and trying it first may be a good starting point. That way you will know if there are any specific problems you need to address as you restore it. Even basket cases can be made like new again. Below is a Mark 5 Greenie I restored a few years ago. IMG_0220cr.jpg It looked like this ...

Re: New owner, want to restore
Do use caution as you have been. Removing to much surface metal will present another problem. The Table Inserts are a fixed so there is no adjustment. Removing to much surface could leave Inserts sitting above the Table surface. Removing a lot of metal to make it look "new" again could wea...

Re: I also inherited an old Greenie
Using the Sanding Disk to turn the belts and pulleys while turning the Speed Dial is not a bad thing. It is something that is done while doing maintenance. You only need to be careful not to turn the Speed Dial to fast. Hopefully you have a owners manual for your Shopsmith. If not, you can download ...
