Shopsmith put putty in that screw from the factory so you can do the same.
Having putty in that screw hole serves a second purpose of helping you remember to not loosen that screw instead of the one on your arbor when changing blades, etc.

Re: Model 555160 Shopsmith
From what I can see, it appears to be a model 500. I've never heard of a model 555 and don't think one was ever made.

Re: Johnson Paste Wax
It is probably just a simple problem of supply and demand. With Trewax, Minnwax, and Johnson's all making similar products, the demand just doesn't justify 3 different companies making this product. If you don't sell much of a product, it makes dollars sense to stop producing it.

Re: Johnson Paste Wax
I don't quite understand the infatuation with Johnson's wax. When I needed wax for my Shopsmith, I ordered a can from Shopsmith themselves. Shopsmith sent me a can of Trewax. That was over 30 years ago so I've forgotten what I paid for it, but I see Ace Hardware still sells it for $13. It is the onl...

Re: Forstner bits with a square taper shank
Yes, I have an old hand brace and an assortment of square shank bits for it. None of mine are forestner bits, but mostly old spiral bits. I really don't use them. They just sit around and collect dust.

Re: Moving shopsmith with possibility of rain
First of all, around here, 50% chance of rain means 98% chance it won't rain at all. But supposing they actually get a forecast right, either tarp it well, or remove the headstock like suggested. Yesterday we had 90% chance of rain here with 1-2" of rain. It didn't rain all day. Today and tonig...

Re: Wheel replacement
My preference for this job would be to get help, lay the Shopsmith on its side on a soft surface to prevent any damage and replace it that way. My age makes it very difficult to work on anything on the floor where I have to get down that far and back up. With it on its side and the damaged wheel nea...

Re: Question why do you want to know the RPM of your Headstock
To me, it isn't important to know RPM, but for some people, they really want to know those numbers. I figure that for me, if it does the job well, actual RPM isn't important.

Re: Magnet on a stick
You did such a nice job. That is just about museum quality. I cheaped out making my magnet on a stick. I had a 3/8" by 3/4" stick of oak in my waste bin. I cut it to around 20" and attached a strong magnet from an old computer hard drive using a screw. It looks like crap but it works....
