Single Bearing Quill better than Double Bearing ...?

I recently replaced the original single bearing quill in my 73' SS 500 with a double bearing quill I bought on eBay. It runs just fine, thank you. However, the single bear quill that I removed looked so nice I wondered if it could be fitted with another bearing to keep as a back-up. While researchin...

I have two woodshapers - A stand alone 1/2" Grizzly, and my Shopsmiths 500s, a vintage 78 and 82. Over the years I have used the Grizzly to cut many feet of stiles and rails to make floating panels in cabinets. I recommend a set of cutters that will allow you to make floating panels. Then it he...

oldc6, I have used milk paint many times, mainly on the Windsor chairs I make. Milk paint is called milk paint because it has a milk protein in the natural pigments that make-it-up. This protein, casein, has some wonderful qualities in terms of bonding with wood. There are 300 year old Windsor chair...

Back when the 510 came out I went to a demostration in Fargo. The salesman suggested I sell one of my 500's and use the money to upgrade my 1982 500. I am glad I didn't, as I like having two machines when I am working. A few years later SS was out with the 520, and now the PP. You have to start ques...

I like it, but it's expensive.

I have two SS 500's, one made in 73, another in 82. I use them as accessory machines, owning other stand along equipment. I love my two machines, and I have never upgraded them beyond dual bearing quills. I would order one through Lowe's as with my military (retired) discount I could get 10% off. I ...
