Re: 10er Dedicated Lathe Thread

Just for fun... I decided to post some pictures of my 10ER as it sits in my garage and some of the modifications / additions along with some parts.
A couple mallets I turned from red oak. I made the smaller one today.

Next picture shows the other side with a magnetic strip to hold the blade guard, try square, combination square, a couple 6" rules, and so on. Note the extreme lower left corner there are two 1¾ dowels mounted to the wall where I can store the 10E tailstock when I take it off. That tailstock and aux table can also be cleared and used as a work support to the left of the saw.

The left end with my tool holder, the tailstock off my 10E (dedicated drill press), the 10E auxillary table, the storage for the chuck, toolrest, drill chucks, fence, etc.

The first picture looks pretty normal - drive spur on spindle, live center in the tailstock.

Re: ShopSmith Mark 5 E-56138 Model 10ER

dc_motor.jpgJust to introduce myself and thank you for your post. It was so easy to access the answer I was seeking, the age of my 10E. I'm currently modifying a 10E serial# 2187 for a production tool. I'm extending the rails, changing the motor to variable speed (from a free Craigslist treadmill)....

Re: serial numbers

Does anyone know if there is a list posted anywhere that has the serial numbers and dates of manufacture for the 10E and 10ER machines? A friend wants to know the date of his 10ER # 76343 Bill V Looks Like Sep-52. Ed Hello Ed, I'm really curious how you derived that date? S.W.A.G., or is there a da...

Re: Sharpening Guide

I don't see where this was resolved. I was looking at the same issue and determined the miter slots on the 10E/ER are at least ⅛" shallower than the MK V. Am I correct?

Re: 10E /ER Motor

I asked about max RPM because some DC motors are capable of 20-25,000 RPM. I thought about running 1:2 or 1:3 to give plenty of torque but without exceeding the maximum RPM of the spindle bearings.

Re: 10E /ER Motor

So assuming a DC motor, what is the maximum RPM the 10ER spindle can be run?

Reversing 10E/ER motor

Thanks for the offer, Doug, but I will hold off for now. Still trying to learn turning in forward. Reverse would really complicate it for me. :D Dan, I understand. However others read this thread and may be interested. I have discovered two advantages when running the spindle in reverse: 1> When sa...

Re: 10er Dedicated Lathe Thread

I believe with the sliding headstock and extendable quill, there is no need for a conventional tailstock.

Bowl turning

I don't know if anyone else has done this, but I was having a really hard time seeing what I was doing on the inside of a bowl. So. I put the toolrest post in the rear hole and adjusted the toolrest to the back inside of the bowl. Then running the spindle in reverse, it was easy to see the tool / pa...

Re: 10er Dedicated Lathe Thread

My 10E has a tapped hole on the back side of the casting where a screw could bear on the tube My 10ER does not. I have no real history on either machine as I'm just the current owner. However, if I have a problem, I do not hesitate to modify mine to make it more useful or to overcome wear or loosene...
