Re: What parts are compatible on 500, 510, 520
Thanks. My idler looks exactly like #3. But, you’re saying #4 would be a better choice? Yes, only because the split in the eccentric bushing suggests that it came out of a newer machine. I've not heard of very many Idler bearing failures with the water pump bearing, and I haven't experienced any. I...

Re: Idler shaft gets super hot
Spinning it cold, stops before after a couple rotations. I have a loose one, uninstalled. With both sheaves on it for inertia and spinning it by hand it stops in about 3 seconds. I'd guess around 4 or 5 rotations. If yours is fully installed the button bearing would also come into play. Typically b...

Re: What parts are compatible on 500, 510, 520
When in doubt you can use the parts listings to check PN and see if that PN is used in later models. (https://shopsmith.com/service-parts/mark-v-models-520-510-505-500/) Quadrant - Assuming you mean the speed control quadrant (aka porkchop) the listings for 520, 510, 500 etc. they are the same. I wo...

Re: Idler shaft gets super hot
The idler shaft on my mark v (SS 41594) is getting super hot. I suspect the bearing is shot. I took the belts off, and it spins, but seems to have a lot of drag. I looked on eBay, but I can’t figure out what bearings will fit. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. As far as I know the bearing is n...

Re: New Power Station Motor Or Fix It
I agree that motors are not installed in the same orientation. Today we have sealed bearings that don't matter. In the past when we had motor bearings that needed to be lubricated. They were designed for the specific application (orientation direction) with the oil cups up so they could be lubricat...

Re: New Power Station Motor Or Fix It
Since SS says no lubrication required, could it be that the manufacturer used (universal) end caps that have "oil holes" that are not used in this application? It makes no sense that they are 90° off set if they are intended to be used. Also oil holes have a spring loaded caps over them t...

Re: New Power Station Motor Or Fix It
If I were to say shop online for a new motor (and I was reluctant to reach out to shopsmith) any suggestions? I'm still interested in learning how to fix my self; just need the right guidance. Shop online: My first thoughts were Zoro and Grainger. Of the two, Grainger appears to have a far superior...

Re: New Power Station Motor Or Fix It
Not too long ago Shopsmith still had these motors, but I only know that because I saw them in a clearance ad so they might be gone. It wouldn't hurt to ask Customer Service. An electric motor shop might have a direct replacement, it is not unique like the Mark 5/V motor. If you take the motor into a...

Re: Belt Sander Question
...And the belt tracks closer to the platen without flapping... Congratulations. Did CS help to solve this? Going back to your original question here, are you saying that the belt is still not in contact with the platen when tensioned but not sanding? Mine is much different than that, it is in firm...

Re: Is it worth it?
I like the PowerPro and wouldn't want to be without it. And $2700 in shop upgrade(s) is a lot of money. I have two, the second I bought used and one DIY with the upgrade kit. Both are Gen 1. I rationalized the first and it appeared to me to be worth it at the time as part of a 520 to Mark 7 upgrade....
