The threaded rod IS threaded on BOTH ends. In 1963 this was PN 2158. Now 502883??? All thread would probably work, but a jam nut should be added. Removal will not be easy since I assume it was securely seated. The blade guard(new style) can be obtained with an upgrade kit. http://www.shopsmith.com/o...

Figured out the problem. I removed the quill and found that the inner bearing was bad. Sent it down to Bill Mayo and he fixed it for me at a very reasonable cost and sent it back to me right away. Great guy to deal with. GREAT! So where near Tampa are you?? It would be helpful if we all knew WHERE ...

While you are 'waiting' for the kroil, pour some evaporust on to that bearing and let it soak overnight.

I use 30 weight non detergent motor oil on my SS. Was told to use it by Shopsmith in the 80's. Been using it for 26 years now with no apparent problems. Brent The last communication(by phone) I had with SS indicated 10W Machine oil. The turbine oil(via Nick...) occurred later. !986 SS manual states...
