Re: Two Bearing Quill

Here is a close up of the sleeve side of the spindle assembly. Notice how the inner race almost completely covered by the sleeve. Unless the sleeve can be removed I don't see how to replace this bearing. Maybe that is why I was told it can't be repaired.

Re: Two Bearing Quill

Maybe this photo will help. The bearing rests against the splines. I can't pull the bearing this direction. The same relation ship exists on the other side with the couple sleeve.

Re: Two Bearing Quill

The bearing is essentially pressed between the spindle side of the shaft and the sleeve. In other words the splines are wider than the inner race, I can't drag the bearing that way (it would leave the inner race behind). It appears that I have the same problem trying to pull the bearing the other di...

Re: Two Bearing Quill

I used my bearing puller on the outer bearing. No problems with that one. It is the inner bearing that has me stumped. It looks like the sleeve and outer part of the spindle (where I just took the bearing off) is one peace. I assume the inner bearing was pressed on fist (it is seated against the spl...

Re: Two Bearing Quill

While doing some maintenance on my double bearing quill, I found that the bearings were rough and needing replacement. After looking over the Forum and doing some research, I found what looks like three types of quill spindle assemblies. One of them has a roll pin making it relatively simple to chan...

Quill Assembly drive Screw broken, is it worth Fixing?

I picked up a an older Shopsmith that had been upgraded over the years. It came with the 520 fence system, a bandsaw,a jointer, strip sander, brand new-still-in-box belt sander, and a bunch of parts left over from upgrading the table and fence system. I noticed that the quill return was a little wea...

Re: JB Weld on the headstock

A seller on Ebay (simon*e) uses steel nut inserts in the casting where the speed assembly attaches. He has some nice pictures of this "improved and upgraded headstock". In addition to this improvement he install A full round cable holder using a secured countersink screw and lock nut.

Re: Broke my gilmer idler sheave...what now?

I just bought a brand new, after market "old style" idler shaft with water pump bearings from a seller on EBay for my model 500 Shopsmith with the poly v belt drive system. It looks like, fits like, and functions like the original. It looks like that seller has found a source for the water...
