I've never built anything from plans. When I build something, I sit down with a pencil and paper and make a rough sketch. Then I pull out my tape measure to get the measurements and start cutting wood.

I save oak chips and put them around the base of the trees in my yard. My soil is highly alkaline, and the wood chips seem to moderate the PH a little and also help control weeds.

My only hurdle is the fact that all my stuff is in the garage and it isn't heated so I can't really work out there in the dead of the NE winter. I hope at some point to cure that problem as well. That's a beautiful bench. My workshop is in my basement and I don't have enough room for a wonderful bench like that. I build a small bench in my workshop. Mine folds down against the wall when I need more room, but it still serves my needs fairly well.
I'd love working on a bench like yours.

My Wife and I built this cabinet in November, 2010. It is cherry with no stain. It got just two coats of urethane varnish to finish it.
