Re: Used Power Pro Headstock

You're saving a few hundred but you're not getting a warranty. Plus, why is he selling it without the rest of the machine? I think I'd pass.

Re: Cutting miters

Using a track saw or miter saw is a better choice for bevels of more than 15-20°. But if you have to do it on the SS, I start by cutting the work-piece to length (at 90°) so that I'm only shaving the last fraction of an inch off the bevel end. That way, there's no big cutoff on the uphill side to sl...

Re: Inexpensive Dust Collector Remote Switch

If the current rating is an issue, you could get a 120v-coil contactor for another $10-$15 that can handle 30+ amps and use the remote switch to trigger the contactor.

Re: Mark VII Repair questions

Jacob Anderson has a video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbHVTwSp9DI that covers the quill mechanism on a M5, and he shows attaching the spring, starting around 4:30.

Re: Mark VII Repair questions

I don't own a Mark VII, but I'm assuming the quill retraction is similar to the Mark 5/V. It looks like someone tightened the set screw. It's not intended to be bottomed out in the groove; just protrude into the groove enough to keep the quill from coming all the way out. The spring damage is typica...

Re: Hello from Michigan

Did your Mark VII come with a lathe chuck? The gadget to the right of the Morse taper drive looks like a SS adapter for one.

Re: SC Johnson Paste Wax

... I put the can in a pot with an inch or so of water in it, and heated it on the stove over with a fairly low heat. You shouldn't need to heat the pot with the wax in it. Heat the water, take the pot off the stove and put the can in the hot water. The water should have enough residual heat to mel...

Re: Table saw alignment fixture (Rockler)

Now if you really want to drive yourself nuts, after you get the slot aligned to the blade to your liking (e.g., 0.005), check it again with the table tilted. If it's still 0.005, you're gold. But if it isn't, it can't be corrected just by rotating the table. It means the table is canted forwards or...

Re: Squareness of Way and Bench Tubes

I'm not sure if this is true for all models, but generally, the bench tubes are 3/4" longer than the way tubes. Make sure the tubes are seated all the way. I went nuts for about 10 minutes once when the way tubes seem to have grown about 1/8". The set screws were loose at the hinge end and...
