Re: Need help changing the belts on my Greenie

So glad it helped you! I'm lucky mine was put in the right way or I would have been confused too. Products like the Shopsmith have the engineering that won World War II. In this day an age there's not a lot of knowledge around it or familiarity. Without this forum we wouldn't have a chance.

Re: SPT Belt Sander rehab guide?

I'm in it deep. My drive drum is crowned (1987-88 model). I've soaked the idler drum bushings with 5W turbine oil and they're starting to spin freely. I don't think I'll disassemble the idler drum. Instead I'll add a zerk fitting and let the new grease displace the old gunked up lube. - Anyone do th...

Re: Bandsaw Bearings

In preparing for a trip to Ace for 7mm bolts I took the time to attempt to test fit two 627 bearings into the upper and lower guides using the factory 1/4" bolt with 7mm step. After filing the upper and lower guide brackets to clear the double 627 bearing set-up I noticed everything spins freel...

Re: Bandsaw Bearings

I'm looking at the double bearing mod but I think I'll just change to 7mm bolts and tap the upper and lower holders to 7mmx1mm threads. If I'm going to grind the housing why spend all that money to shim a 1/4" bolt to fit a 7mm bearing? My local Ace has lots of 7mm hardware in the little white ...

It's been my experience that it'll be better but there's always a little bit to clean up.

Re: Here's my rebuilt shorty:

I just didn't care for the new graphic on the new speed control dial I bought for my resto. I sent the original stripped one to an ebay vendor and he rebuilt the original speed control dial. An added benefit is the engagement is very positive. Now things look right (OK, I need to order a new sticker...

Caster foot lever position, old vs new...

...Is there any way to relocate the foot lever on the older caster set? I upgraded to the newer big red tyres and now the foot lever hits the wider flange on the new wheelset. 1980's vintage (top) vs 1986 vintage (bottom). At some point they moved them over to what's shown in my second picture below.

Re: Informal Poll - Size of your Shop and how many Shopsmiths?

Good tip! Is there a bearing kit of some sort? I bought bearings for the quill and motor from my local bearing stockist. For the idler shaft and main shaft I bought complete units off of ebay. The idler shaft is from bandsaw tire warehouse and the main shaft is a rebuilt unit from a Michigan ebay s...

Re: Replacing dual quill bearings; sealed or shielded?

My quill was a two piece unit as show in the chart above. As mine is an 1986 model it's the second one down. It's held together with a roll pin that must be driven out to remove the inner bearing. Once the roll pin is removed and the shaft is separated into two pieces the inner bearing can be remove...
