The nut is left hand threads on that arbor. And the putty in the hole at the collar is intentional, to prevent accidentally loosening it when changing blades or other accessories.

Re: What am I doing wrong?
I don't think the saw guard should be rotated for the alignment pin to touch the way tube. The top of my lower guard is parallel to the tie bar with the pin away from the way tube (I am using my longer bolt instead of the alignment pin since I can't find my pin at the moment.) IIRC, the shorter pin ...

Re: What am I doing wrong?
2. Also, does the rubber gasket stopper go between the head stock and the lower saw guard or between the lower saw guard and the table (see pic 3 - which side of the vertical metal bar does the rubber thingy go on? ) I didn't see anyone else answer this question, so I'll try. I'm not 100% sure, but...

Glad to hear you've made progress.
For comparison, here is what my 1980 Mark V 500 with 1 1/8 h.p. motor sounds like:

The type of noise you described sounds like what I heard when my button bearing needed replacing. If it is the problem, yours may be too far gone to save, but lubricating the control sheave (thru hole seen in same picture) and allowing machine to stay in drill press position overnight will let oil s...

I do not have the program to edit them into one document. Your hints have been very helpful to me on several occasions, so just want to share that I have found PDF24Creator to be easy to use and very helpful for all things related to PDFs. It is available as a free download. I have no other interes...

Re: Model 555160 Shopsmith
Without seeing the table(s), the carriage looks like it could be a 505, 510, or 520. This webpage will help you determine which: https://www.shopsmith.com/getting_started/which_table_system.htm The belt cover should have sheet metal screws and tinnerman clips to hold it on, similar to what hold on t...

Re: Mark vii table saw table and guide
I don't have a Mark VII, but am curious if any other tables (Mark 5/V) will fit on a Mark VII? Or is the carriage unique to a Mark VII? Since I think a Mark 5/V headstock will fit on a Mark VII (if you remove the gear track), will a Mark 5/V carriage also fit on a Mark VII and therefore the appropri...

Re: Box edges-need some suggestions.
Also agree that it is a fine looking piece of work. In order to help visualize what chamfered edges might look like, I tried to add some lines using Photoshop (my skills are very limited). Others who are much better at 3D modeling could do better. I didn't try to add lines on all edges, but think th...
