Re: Old shopsmith with a poorly replaced motor
In a given decade, how many times will you guys pull the logo plate? Over the past 43 years (4 + decades), it would be hard to say. To perform the recommended lubrication after every ten hours of use, I removed the access cover numerous times during the first few years when I used it the most. Besi...

Re: Old shopsmith with a poorly replaced motor
In addition to ebay, you might also look at Craigslist. And, when checking, also search for "Shop Smith" (spelled as 2 words) for possibly more results. You will also get results for anything with the word "Shop", but worth the effort. Here is one example of what I found by doing...

Re: How do I install the upper saw guard on this 84' model 500?
I'm not sure what it is called, but looks like some sort of a retaining clip that just needs to be pried open slightly to let it disengage from the groove in which it must be seated. I have not tried removing mine, but looks like a small flat blade screwdriver should work. Looks like yours may have ...

Re: Moving shopsmith with possibility of rain
Slide the headstock off of the way tubes and put it inside your vehicle. Then you don't have to worry about the bags leaking, blowing off or open, etc.

Re: Wheel replacement
I too don't have a floor jack, but just use a block of wood as fulcrum point and then use a crow bar, or other long strong piece as a lever to raise Shopsmith off of floor and support with other blocks of wood. And, you can repeat process with higher fulcrum point and more blocks until machine is ra...

Re: How to Sharpen Stanley 28 /29 Corner Rounding Tools?
When I first got the tools, I tried each size out on the piece of cedar to see how well they worked. Just dawned on me today that the sample piece might make a good guide for sharpening. I ran each size over its corner several times to be sure the radii were all cutting to their maximum. Only cut in...

Re: How to Sharpen Stanley 28 /29 Corner Rounding Tools?
I decided to try the sandpaper method first. I didn't have dowels that were a close enough fit, so used the tools themselves to round over some edges on a piece of cedar, then wrapped 280, 320, and 400 grit sandpaper over the edges and gave end each 10 strokes with each grit. Not perfect, but defini...

How to Sharpen Stanley 28 /29 Corner Rounding Tools?
I recently purchased a pair of Stanley 28 / 29 Corner Rounding Tools and was wondering if anyone has any instructions or information on the best way to sharpen them. I've tried contacting Stanley and they have nothing. My first thought is to wrap some fine grit sandpaper (starting with 220 or so) wr...

Re: Noisy quill?
My problem is the noise gets loud with the disk sander on it and it didn’t have that noise years ago. Should I attempt to record it and post here? Unfortunately, the forum does not allow video or audio files as direct attachments. Others have posted videos to YouTube and provided a link. I have use...

Re: New shopsmith owner, needs advice
If the start switch is stuck closed, then be very careful not to let it run too long. Be thankful your breaker IS tripping. Last year I had to clean out my motor when it only hummed when trying to start, and I re-formed the contact arms too much such they were unable to disengage properly, and then ...
