Maybe a 2x4 could support the weight. Maybe not. I'm not a structural engineer. Also, the wood could be rotted or termite damaged. On an old home like that I would certainly want to check that out. I don't have experience with this, but it seems I remember reading about flattening a stone by rubbing it on wet/dry sandpaper laying on a piece of plate glass. Since it is an oil stone, I imagine you could use mineral spirits instead of water. That would have the added bonus of cleaning the oil out...

Biscuit joiner
I am considering the purchase of a biscuit joiner. Does anyone have an opinion about the Shopsmith joiner? It seems to me a handheld unit would be more useful. Also, would you even recommend a handheld joiner? I have heard about problems with alignment and biscuits swelling and becoming visible.
