Good day today, I finally got the 10ER 12V-DC conversion completed. The control panel is all mounted and painted, the switches are all install as well as the Tach. Get this,,,,," Everything Works ".

Now I can start using the lathe to turn my first pieces. I will attempt Large Chess Pieces. Key word there is ATTEMPT. That is what I really want to do with this now. I want to thank every one in this group of great guys for all the help that you all have supplied to me. You made the conversion go allot easier than I thought it would have been.

Hi, Very cool what you did with your 10ER!

Another forum member referred me to your post b/c I was asking if anyone had ever rigged up a tachometer to their SS.

I have a 510 and am interested in rigging up a tach, but don't know the first thing about it. I use SS primarily for wood turning so I would want to know RPM's of the quill (ie not the motor's drive shaft). I assume that somehow the tach has to detect rotational speed via inductance and that a sensor needs to be near the quill. (I am basing this mostly on the way the speedometer works on my bicycle.) Also how do you power the tach? It would be nice if could just use a couple of AA batteries as opposed to working off A/C. Then I suppose an on/off switch would be handy so it didn't drain the batteries.

Would appreciate any insight!

Hi,

You can buy an inexpensive hand held non contact tachometer from Harbor Freight $40 or amazon $20.

just put a piece of the included reflector tape on the rear quill take off spindle or a small faceplate mounted there and you are all set. They are battery operated. You can also get a setup similar to the above to make it more permanent.

Personally, I just adjust the speed by by the approximates of the speed control. I have a non contact like above, but haven't gotten around to using it.

48 evenly spaced strips of foil on whatever is being measured, if I did the math right. ;) Then just divide the displayed value by 48, right?

P.S. Methinks multiplying by 2.5 rather than 48 is relevant.
