fhahnel I have an aftermarket (not Shopsmith) blade I want to get sharpened. It's stuck in the arbor. I've put WD40 in it overnight. Cannot get it loose. Any ideas?
edma194 First, take it off the machine and mount the arbor in a bench vice with the nut on top. Loosening an arbor is always dangerous to do in any position, but more so mounted on a spindle that can turn. Then after more soaking in penetrating oil and tapping on it, and maybe hitting it with a heat gun briefly, use some pipe to extend the wrench to put a lot of leverage on it. I hate doing it but sometimes hitting the end of wrench with a hammer will do better than more torque to make it move.
john_001 WD40 isn't intended to be a penetrating oil. Try a penetrating oil (e.g., Liquid Wrench or PB Blaster).
wa2crk Can you get the arbor off the quill shaft? It looks in your photo that the set screws are not lined up, they should be. If you can get it off the quill then proceed as edma suggested and it should come apart. Bil V
chapmanruss First question - is the arbor stuck on the Shopsmith or is it just mounted there and only the arbor nut is stuck? If just the arbor nut is stuck you can remove the arbor and blade from your Shopsmith and try placing the nut or main body end of the arbor in a vice for better leverage. If you don't have a vice you can continue to work with it still mounted on your Shopsmith. You should cover the blade when trying to loosen the nut to prevent accidents while trying to remove the blade. Those teeth are sharp and one slip can cause some painful damage to your hands. Use longer wrenches for better leverage. Try a penetrating oil instead of WD-40. With the blade and arbor off the Shopsmith place on a flat surface with the nut up and put the penetrating oil on it and allow it to "soak" in. You can then remount the blade and arbor back on the Shopsmith or in a vice to try removing it again. I do not recommend tightening or loosing arbor nuts when not being held by the Shopsmith or in this case a vice.
RFGuy I highly recommend either a long arbor wrench like Shopsmith sells or a long open end wrench. Hard to tell in the pic, but I don't think that wrench is long enough to give you enough torque on it. fhahnel Thanks for your replies so far. It isn't stuck on the Shopsmith itself. Also, I'll try a penetrant to help. It's been on the arbor for ten years or so. I've now got the long wrench from Shopsmith as well and would it use on the right saw of the saw blade in the last image.. When trying to "loosen" this and looking at the LAST image as a reference, which way do I turn the nut(?) on the right side (part facing AWAY from headstock)?
