quill shaft

Post by danzookey »

Hello, new member to the forum, but owned mark V 510 for years.
Problem I believe is quill shaft warped?? When I get down to the final stage of turning bowls it seem like the quill jumps and breaks the outer edge of my bowl. I thought it was probably the shaft. Did it on the last 3 bowls so I quit for a while. Now I want to start turning again but not sure what to fix. All replies will be greatly appreciated.

the quill jumps ???

can you describe that better ?

Can you wobble the quill with your hands?

Are you turning with the quill extended? Retracted and locked in the headstock, it will not move other than a few thousandths of run-out which is normal.

Are you turning with a faceplate or with a chuck?

I move the headstock to the right as far as the carriage will let it go on Mark V's and try to employ a speed reducer on bowls, or I move to my 10E with speed controller to get the speed down.

The actual stock you are turning, its moisture content, the lathe tools you use (Eazy Wood Carbide cutters are my preference), the position of the tool rest, the angle of engagement, and speed (especially the speed) will effect all sorts of variables in your bowl turning.

Find the Easy Wood purchase section and read the review done by someone who had never turned bowls successfully... before using them.... They are that good.

I had a conversation with an old-timer who said he wasn't going to consider any of those new-fangled carbide chisels. I sent him a copy of the ad that ran in 1953 from MAGNA Engineering, showing Carbide Lathe Chisels were available with the 10ER still being sold.

A few weeks later I got a note that said "Well, goes to prove you can teach some old dogs, new tricks." He got a set, and realized what he had been missing for half a century.

My Shopsmith had a single bearing quill and would skip or bounce at the outer end of the bowl. Replaced the quill with a double bearing quill. That solved the problem. If you know someone with a double bearing quill try out on your SM.

If you have quill shaft wobble excessive enough to cause damage while turning, I would think you could feel it by loosely grasping the end of the shaft while at turning speed.

Guys, what models have that dreaded single bearing
quill?

Dan, can you use the tailstock with some
kind of center in it, just to hold things
in order?

There is a member here, who turns LOTS
of bowls, and leaves the center intact, and
then turns a smaller bowl in it. Think of a
"chips and salsa" bowl.

He also uses, almost exclusively, a Model 10.
(They ALL had double-bearing quills.)
(I'm wondering why THAT update was tried.
The single bearing update, that is.)

10 ER, stripped down.
Basic 10ER, Parts machine. Will be a semi-dedicated drill-press machine.
10 ER, a "survivor" of the trailer fire, in the back yard, needing restoration. Has a Mk5 headrest. Finally, stripped down.
Numerous parts, for Model 10 stuff. Except for lower saw guard, A and B adapters, I've got it.

Looking for one more, or some 9 inch extension table raisers.

Everett, had the same discussion with my brother, Sterling.

Well after he had a Model 10 set up as a lathe, he was still using
Shopsmith (a few) and Craftsman HSS lathe chisels. So, I kept
sending him links to Captain Eddie's http://eddiecastelin.com/
stuff. A few weeks ago, he FINALLY got a complete package of
carbide bits. We MADE the handles and holders for them.

Yes, you CAN teach an OLD DOG new tricks.

Buy the latest Shopsmith double bearing quill. It has larger bearings with the second bearing spaced closer to the front bearing. I found that 20% of the single bearing quills exceed the +-.001 runout along with about 10% of the early two bearing quills. Make sure your quill advance is tightly closed. Excessive bearing wear will give bad results for bowls and lathe work.

i realize removing the quill isn't a major job,,,, that being said is there any way to tell if it is a double bearing quill with out removing it?
