My Shopsmith 10ER

Post by amboyna »

Not sure where to start. I have been reading threads for several weeks now. And I have learned a lot. It seems some experts here know just about everything there is about the 10E and 10ER. So now it's time to ask questions.
First a little bit about myself. I purchased my first Shopsmith in the 70's. Serial number 34916. In the 80's I completely refurbished it. This link has some photos:

The original owner was from Lebanon Oregon. He wrote a letter to Magna in 1963. I do not have his letter. But I do have the letter Magna sent him and a 4 page brochure telling how to align different parts. My question pertains to the brochure. The title is "How To Align Sawsmith".
Anyone have suggestions as to why they call it a Sawsmith? Everything is on Magna stationary. The letter, envelope and brochure. The letter is signed by J.A. Kiernan. It is not a pre-printed signature.
Front and back of the brochure scanned and posted here. If anyone is interested I will upload the inside pages too.

Welcome aboard. :)

Magna American, which was a successor company to Magna Engineering who made the 10ER, also made a radial arm saw called the Sawsmith. http://www.shopsmith.com/ss_forum/maint ... 12750.html

It would be interesting to see Mr. Jenkins letter to Magna. I wonder if he had a Sawsmith RAS. I do not see them for sale very often around here and the last one I remember near here was in Cottage Grove OR. A ways from Lebanon and further from myself in the Portland area.

Russ,
Yes, I sure wish I had the original letter Mr. Jenkins wrote. Reading that letter made me jump to the conclusion he had asked questions about his Shopsmith. He talked about the quill and an eccentric motion. Then mentioned the spindle and bearing assembly.
Russ I see you live near me. I live in Vancouver, WA. Would love to see your 10E 1077 someday. It might of been sold at the old Montgomery Wards building in Portland, now known as Montgomery Park.

The 10E S/N 1077 was most likely purchased at the Montgomery Ward store on Vaughn St. I bought it from the nephew of the original owner who had passed away. It is coming along and all the parts needing it were painted last week. I still need to clean & polish the way tubes than it is time to start assembling it. With our nice weather this week I will be doing more yard work before winter comes than working on inside projects. I also have some flooring to install before the end of the month. I hope to have 10E S/N 1077 done it time for it's 71st birthday on November 15. The day Magna Engineering shipped the first 250 Shopsmith Model 10E's to Montgomery Ward.
