Mark 5 Dealers Manual

Post by amboyna »

I have an interesting book Shopsmith supplied to their salesmen in 1957. I have scanned about 1/4 of the book so far. And I found many interesting pages. I decided to post a couple of pages and ask a question. Shown are two price list pages. There is a column that tells whether the part will work on a 10ER or not. Listed is the 11" bandsaw and the 6" belt sander. It says they will work on a 10ER. Has anyone hooked either of these to a 10ER?
Last image shows the cover of the book.

Yes you can use MK 5 SPTs on the 10ER but you need the Power Mount Adapter Kit shown in the first picture. It is the first item in the left column. That is extremely rare and expensive if you find one. Skip Campbell of MKCTools makes the adapter and head stock pulley. His parts for this are not cheap either but probably cheaper than the originals which may take years to find. http://www.mkctools.com/10erparts.htm

That is a great find. If you would consider sharing it as is my custom, I will work to retouch and restore it.

If that resonates with you please email your scans to ShopsmithHistorian@gmail.com

Everett,
I would be more than happy to share this manual. However, being over 200 pages, how about if I put it all on a thumb drive and mail it to you.
I scan everything in a 350 DPI Tif. I touch them up as I go. Some are not fixable. But I do the best I can. Almost all the pages have chipping on one edge. They are easy to fix.
Question- when I convert the files to a jpg what size should I make them.
There are 7 chapters to this book separated by tabs. Index, Policies, Prices, Selling Aids, Advertising, Manuals and Service (repair). I just finished scanning the Selling Aids section. The manuals section is huge. I realize most of the manuals have already been scanned and uploaded. But to make this complete I will scan them anyway.
It has been a lot of fun scanning so far. Here are a couple more pages for everyone's enjoyment.
Anyone ever seen one of these Display Racks?
And the training films. According to the page below there are 7 twenty minute films in 8mm format. Where are those films now.

I think a few of what might be the training films can be found on YouTube. I think a forum member posted a link to them a while ago.

I will check it out. Thanks.
There are 4 booklets in the manual. The booklet below is 5 1/2" by 7 1/2 inches. It is in pretty good shape with a small amount of retouching needed. The front cover has been fixed and the back cover has not. I got a kick out of pages 10 and 11.
Enjoy.

This brochure is 11 1\2" by 8" tall. It was folded to fit in the manual. I retouched the front cover and for the most part got rid of the heavy crease. The back cover is shown as scanned. It will get fixed before it is uploaded.
These brochures are probably around. But I am posting anyway just in case they haven't. Note the Price is 10 cents.

Here are the last two brochures that were in the Dealers Manual. Both are 7 1/4" long by 3 1/4" tall. They are in bad shape and probably can't be fixed. If anyone has already seen these please let me know.

Oh man, I love that vintage advertising, but WHAT were they thinking with the cartoon of the man using the Shopsmith?? Hey, let's make our customers think that ugly dudes use Shopsmiths!
