Re: What Are These For?

Time for a new installment of “what’s this?” I made a trip to my grandparents house and looked through my grandpas old shop. This came out of a drawer labeled “shopsmith.” I can’t find what it is or have any idea what it’s for. All that I know is that it slides in the miter slot in the table.

In the bottom image the part that is riding in the miter slot is part of the SS Dial Indicator.

I also see two sliding t-nuts and some hardware used to secure items in the SS miter slot and a (knurled nut - nice to have - I have a dozen or so with no assigned function - just available when needed).

Wow I love this group. Always has the answers.

I was talking specifically about the part in the miter slot, the hardware just happened to be in the table at the time.

Now time to see if I can locate the dial itself for purchase. Or another one that will mount to this piece. Because there’s no dial in all of my parts.

I use one that is shown in the attached link. Mine is the 1" Titon with a "lug back". Just about any dial indicator with a lug back will work on the base that you. There are many for which you can spend a lot more money but for what. Remember, this is a wood shop and not a machine shop.

Note the little red box in the image from the first link I sent. Stay of the lookout for that. It is a set of tips for the plunger in the dial indicator. Most of those tips you probably won't have a pressing need for but .....

Those tips will likely fit on just about any dial indicator that you might acquire.

in the photo from Fri Jan 03, 2020 5:16 pm the rod shaped item to the left sure looks a lot like the plunge stop rod and the indicator for my PC 690 router.

Could it be part of the SS Dial indicator set?
