Created to move discussion off the 'newuser thread'.

Did you loop the clip over the end of the porkchop?

I think we really really need to see pix.

The drive sleeve does not spin true. But I haven't noticed that spindles spinning out of true when I turn it on.

This is where the sheave is hitting the quadrant. The speed is between "h" and "i".

I was trying to see if I needed to do a high speed adjustment. When I put the speed control assembly back into the headstock, the high speed stop set screw was flush with the top of the jam nut.

Starting the machine up the first time after putting it all back together, it seemed to be sprinting towards high speed.

Go to Shopsmith Large Format Drawings, Illustrations and More

It's here in the Maintenance and Repair Forum where your post was appropriately relocated to as JPG suggested.

https://www.shopsmith.com/ss_forum/view ... 90#p185690

Scroll down the page until you find document:

Bill Mayo - Mark V Headstock Improvement - Repair Kit for Speed Control and Eccentric Bushing v1.01 13 Jun 2016.pdf

Download it and it is the best Speed Control Adjustment document that I think you will find. It is the collection of knowledge and posts on the subject by my late friend and mentor Bill Mayo.

Looking at the way your Gilmer belt is tracking, look at that as well. Eccentric may be non-captive in the headstock, and a fender washer is often needed if screw at 12:00 O'clock. Yours is Gilmer so screw may be lower toward bottom , plus the setscrews he talks about to retain bearing in eccentric. Be sure not to over tighten in the eccentric. Pay close attention to the eccentric bolt below and don’t over tighten it or you can break off the casting ears that clamp it in place.

All of this, he discusses including how to adjust it. Lots of photos included.

Can't tell in photo but I would reroute the wiring away from the speed control mechanism. It seems very close.

Good Luck,

Everett

You have a "B" Gilmer Greenie.

The speed control indicator dial is inaccurately set. It is the last thing set after doing a high speed adjustment. It is positioned to indicate fast as the speed control is reinstalled with the speed control set to butt against the high speed stop.

If the control sheave IS hitting the speed control, the high speed stop is NOT 'stopping soon enough'.

Yes do reposition the electrical wiring away from the speed control ,moving parts.

The gilmer belt tracking does so typically towards the rear of the drive sleeve pulley.

The idler shaft/eccentric location may be controlled by two clips that hang on the bolt mentioned above (the one to NOT overtighten for fear of breaking the 'ears').

Nuf fer now.

After I pulled my headstock apart and replaced the quadrant gears, mine hit the sheave too when reassembled. I did the high speed adjustment and it took care of that.
