Only use electrolysis or evaporust to remove rust.

Minimize use of abrasives. Think of them as polishing thingies.

Only use a hammer after ALL other alternatives have been unsuccessful.

Only rarely use a hammer to tap something during reassembly.

Squeezzing is better than impact.

JPG - Hard to tell your tone in your reply, but I was jk. I read the newcomer information before and didn't recall seeing the same information you shared in my post that will eventually get buried in all my updates and questions. Also, the information you shared is about operating the jointer and not related to restoring. I would think this information is more valuable to the forum.
I am inclined to "jk" as well, but the comments are valid. I do realize they will be buried as they stand.

If there is sufficient interest in a sticky restoring tip thread, speak up folks and get one started.

One thing about doing a "Sticky" thread about restoring is it could end up being more of a Q & A than just tips on restorations as anyone can post to it. I think we may be better off continuing the current course answering questions as they come specific to the poster's situation.

As for the picture John posted, the pulley end shaft having a "ring" is where the shaft leaves the housing and is subject to all "evil" things out in the world. To me the "ring" looks like rust and/or gunk.

RE: Stripped Threads in Fence Quadrant - Model 620 Jointer

My threads are stripped, so I cannot tighten the fence on my Model 620 jointer. Is buying a new quadrant part the only option, or has anyone tried a thread insert? Size is 1/2" diameter, 20 TPI, and not sure if an insert exists.

Thanks,
Scott

1/2-20 Helicoils exist. You will need a special sized drill and tap for the new hole and an insertion tool. Kits are available but I don't know how the price compares to a new quadrant. A good machine shop may be cheaper than either.

A new Quadrant is Part Number 502651 for the Jointer Fence Tilt Quadrant and is $44.07 plus shipping. As John said it is unknown what it would cost to repair it so you would need to cost out the coil and needed tools to see if it is worth while to repair vs. replacing.

Russ/JPG - I agree, it may not be a good idea to start a "Sticky" just for Q&A.

I finally got my order from SS yesterday after almost 2 weeks! Not sure why it took so long, but I now have everything I need to put the jointer back together. I ended up ordering the guard spring+washers to see if they were compatible with the older model. As far as I can tell they are the same parts? everything fit and I'm able to pre-load (torsion) the spring before installing on the jointer.

I also picked up a spare 10er for $40 and it came with a speed changer. I'm hoping its in better condition than my current one, so I could replace the pulley shaft or the entire speed changer.

Spare speed changer photos. Planning to use this one to replace out the worn shaft on my first speed changer.
