Post by DLB »

I have an old (pre-500) Mark 5/V shaper/sander fence and it has the clamps that go under the table edges, like the last photo and top one in the second to last photo. The newer (510/520) mounts to holes in the table and does not have those clamps, the mounts are closer together. As always, there may be more versions. The first photo, it was sitting on a 510/520 table but I could not tell for sure what type it was.

David correctly identified the Shaper Fences in your pictures. The one in the first picture does look like the one for the original aka 500 tables. The middle picture has two of the three Mark series Shaper Fences. The top one for the Mark V 510, 505, 520 & Mark 7. The bottom one for the Mark 5/V 500. There is a third version for the old Mark VII which is similar to the one for the Mark V 510, 505, 520 & Mark 7 which has holes in the table top for mounting. The original Shaper Fence has only one side with the adjustment knob for setting the fence position. Older ones come without the plastic shield found on newer ones. The Shaper Fence for the Mark V 510, 505, 520 & Mark 7 has a shorter base that doesn't extend to the table front and back. It also has adjustment knobs for both sides of the fence. The original Shaper Fence for the Mark 5 aka Mark V 500 has come in all three colors to match the paint on the Mark 5's. If originally used on your Model 10ER it would likely have been the Greenie paint color.

I went out to the shop and took some picture to help. The picture below is the Shaper Fence for the Mark 5 which came out about August 1953. The Mark 5 was introduced March 1954 and the Shaper fence works on the Model 10's also.

The next picture is the Model 10's Jointer/Shaper Fence.

Below is the Model 10's Jointer/Shaper Fence with a Sanding Drum in the fence. Note the drum cannot go below the table level and is too large to be contained in the fence.

Next is the back of the Aluminum Sanding Disk that would go with your Model 10ER.

As I said before yours may have had either the 3/8" or 5/16" set screw since accessories were changing to the 5/16" set screw in late 1953 in anticipation of the Mark 5 release.

One more picture. Below is the 2-1/2" Jointer Cutter Head P/N 12 230. Earlier, before the part numbers changed November 1951, it was P/N 129-12X. The Model 10 version had 1/4" set screws and the Mark 5 version had 5/16" set screws. The part number remained the same after the set screw size changed as did many of the accessories.

It does make an effective Jointer but is very messy without any dust collection and very hazardous not having any guards to protect contact with the spinning knives. Although I have these accessories and have tried them, for the reasons above, I use either my Model 4E Jointer on my Model 10ER or, most often, my Model 505681 Shopsmith Jointer with all current safety guards on my Mark V or 7. The Model 505681 Jointer has dust collection whereas the Model 4E Jointer does not. Dust collection is the one Jointer upgrade that does not fit on the Model 4E Jointer made for the Model 10's.

Hopefully this will minimize confusion rather than adding some.

Thanks JPG for the link tp the pictures of the three Shaper Fence versions. The middle one for the old Mark VII is very similar to the Mark V 510, 505, 520 & Mark 7 one in the bottom picture. The main difference is the placement of the mounting bolt holes.

I just want to say thanks for all the feed back on my journey. Next question for Russ. I saw a you tube video and was wondering if if was you. They took a 10 er and outfitted it with a new motor and a VFD. If that was your video I would love to have the information for the next upgrade

Are you perhaps thinking of Skip Campbell of MKCtools.

I must have missed this post. I'm not looking to sell mine, but would happily trade for the 520 version. There are some available on eBay, including this one that just showed up as a new listing: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Shopsmith-500- ... SwknBfzROJ There is also a Greenie version that is less expensive and w/ free shipping: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-Shopes ... SwAMRfN558 (Not quite as pretty as Russ's in its present state.)
