New to the Shopsmith

Howdy all

We I am new to shopsmiths and had a few questions. I have my Grandfather Smith that i am putting back into service for my shop. I belive its a 10ER. I am missing a few parts and want to make sure I purchase the correct ones. I know I do not have a drill chuck. Should I purchase original or is there something better out there. Any information would be appreciated. Pictures for the build below

Any shopsmith model drill chuck will work.

I saw your post in the other thread first but wanted to welcome you again to the Forum. Thanks for starting your own restoration thread. As JPG already said any Shopsmith Drill Chuck with the 5/8" bore will work. If you want an original Drill Chuck for it that would be the Jacobs 3326 made for the Shopsmith that has the 3/8" set screw. That Drill Chuck was later changed to a 5/16" set screw for the Mark 5. The original chuck is very similar to the current Shopsmith Drill Chuck. The Chuck on the left in the picture below would be like the one that originally came with your Model 10ER. The only difference between the three is the set screws.

Of interest to me is your Model 10ER has the highest serial number I have seen at 102499 making it one of the last ones made. As I said in the other thread knowing which versions of parts it has would be of interest to me. I have been documenting the changes in the Model 10's for some time. Your restoration is coming along beautifully and parts are looking brand new. Well done. Any questions about parts/accessories or pretty much anything you want to know just ask.

Thanks guys I really appreciate everything. Russ I might be getting with you on some other parts/accessories. I did go the extra mile and powder coat all the pieces. I have order a rip fence and a Jacob's chuck.

The fence for your 10ER would be the fourth and last version with the angled front lock knob that has the wedge on the end of the threaded shaft. Fence version 3 and 4 look the same except for that wedge inside the base. There are pictures of the fences on pages 1 and 2 of the 10ER survey at the link below. The survey is the 4th item on the top row. There is a lot of other information gathered there for us by Everett Davis.

Russ is a sharpener fence the same as a planer? I have seen multiple pictures where people are putting drum Sanders inside this housing. I want to make sure I purchase the correct item. I would like to get one of these as well as the 12" sanding disk.

Your picture is of the Jointer/Shaper Fence for the Model 10's. It replaces the table insert. It uses the 2-1/2" Jointer Cutter Head made during the Model 10's production and later into the 1950's. It is also the shaper fence. A PDF copy of the manual is below.

Due to the diameter of the sanding drum it does not fit well into the Jointer Shaper Fence's opening of 2-1/4". That is the same diameter as the sanding drum without the sanding sleeve. Trying to get the sanding drum end below the table level can have the sanding sleeve rubbing on the opening. I have not actually tried using the sanding drum with the Jointer/Shaper Fence on any of my Model 10's. If anyone reading this has I'm sure they will add to this. There is a second option for the Model 10's which is to use the Shaper Fence for the Mark 5/V's with the original table system aka 500. This fence was introduced before the Mark 5 and fits the Model 10 tables. This Shaper fence was likely introduced before your Model 10ER was made. A PDF copy of it's manual is below. Note that in this first manual for the shaper fence it is shown on a Model 10ER.

Although they both do pretty much the same thing a planer is for wider surfaces and the Shopsmith Planer takes up to 12" wide. A Jointer is for board edges.

As for the sanding disk it should be the aluminum one with more ribbing on the back and a 3/8" set screw to be correct for Model 10ER's. The original sanding disk that came with the early Model 10E's had only 6 ribs. The sanding drum would be the same as the current one except having a 1/4" set screw instead of the current 5/16" set screw. The set screw size for almost all of them changed to 5/16" about the time as Magna prepared for the introduction of the Mark 5 in 1954. Since your Model 10ER was one of the last ones made it may have come with accessories that had the 5/16" set screws instead of the 1/4" and 3/8" set screws common on Model 10 accessories. That being said a Sanding Disk and the Sanding Drum with 5/16" set screws could be correct for your Model 10ER. A sanding disk came with the Model10 but the sanding drum was an optional accessory.
