“New” Mark V Greenie

Post by JNewton »

Hi Again!

Well, from not knowing of these wonderful machines’ existence a few months ago, I now own two. The previously seen 10ER, and now a Greenie! It was somewhat bought for the bandsaw, which will likely merit its own restoration thread. I’m on the lookout for a jointer to add to the collection as well.

A quick picture will be added shortly. I’ll update more and begin tearing into it after Christmas, since I won’t officially have any idea I own it until then. (Even though I used it briefly for ripping a little red oak yesterday because the 10ER was set up for cutting box joints. Shhhhhhhh!)

Where are you located. I could have a jointer you might be interested if not to far.

So, I was totally surprised to walk into the garage this morning and find Santa Claus had brought me a Shopsmith, which looks amazingly like the one previously featured in this thread. I did the natural thing and immediately started tearing it apart in preparation for a restoration. I think this time around I’m going to try to do a “good” job, whatever that might mean. The 10ER I did previously really didn’t “need” anything, and I wanted to get to making stuff. So that was more of a de-gunking and paint job than some of the fine efforts featured here. I’m still meaning to polish the tables and redo the bench when I find the time. Maybe once I get the Mark V done, so I won’t be without a working shopsmith.

Anyway, here’s some pics of the progress from today.

The bandsaw and table had some identification numbers of some sort in white paint. Any ideas where these might have been acquired? The table carriage casting is cracked a little, but it looks like it should function fine. What looks like the set screw for the pin that the whole thing pivots on to go to drill press mode appears to be somewhat destroyed. That’s the pile of sawdust that came out of just one way tube. I got it pretty much all apart. Now to put it back together....

That 'set screw' you mentioned is actually a roll pin. It must be driven IN through to remove it. There is a hole on the far side of the pivot bore for it to exit.

Oooohh, that makes so much more sense. What’s the saying, “When you have an Allen wrench everything looks like a set screw.”
