Ok, I’ll wipe it down with mineral spirits and wax them tomorrow then.

I usually just let the Penetrol dry for about a day. At that point it’s still tacky on the surface, and cleans off pretty easily. As JPG said, just don’t go overboard with the cleaning. Penetrol is mostly used as a leveling agent for oil-based paint, so it’s very compatible with mineral spirits. If the Penetrol deep down in the pores gets diluted a bit, it will soon reharden. I personally prefer denatured alcohol over mineral spirits for most cleaning tasks, but my gut tells me to go with mineral spirits for this one. In a pinch, you can use the original formula WD-40, which is 50% mineral spirits, and doesn’t contain silicone.

Good info, Dennis...thank y’all for your help! Mine will not be as beautifully restored as the ones y’all have done, but hopefully mine will look good when I’m done. I’m anxious to begin putting it back together soon...

Thanks again...

BTW, I finally got that cup center out... I held the drift with a pair of pliers so I could whack the heck out of it and it finally came loose.

What type of center would you recommend for making thinks like wooden fids and thimbles? I can post pics if y’all aren’t familiar with those...the fids are basically wooden spikes used to splice rope and the thimbles are small ferrules used in nautical rigging...

I think I would be inclined to attempt that with a small chuck.

I was thinking of a Nova chuck with appropriate adapter?

How would you do the interior hole? Probably a forstner bit, but I’m not sure how to round/radius the edges...
