In this post, from several years ago, BuckeyeDennis reported that he had found the squeal to be caused by lack of pre (side) loading on the bearings.

I had not read this before. It sounds very plausible, if I understand correctly.rpd wrote: ↑Thu Apr 08, 2021 12:32 am In this post, from several years ago, BuckeyeDennis reported that he had found the squeal to be caused by lack of pre (side) loading on the bearings.

I think that what is being said is that without the shims between the outer races the outer races did not spin together. By shimming they make firm contact with one another and thus spin together.
Is this the theory??

My understanding is that the preloading takes up any slack, so that the balls stay in contact with both the inner and outer races.dusty wrote: ↑Thu Apr 08, 2021 7:50 amI had not read this before. Together they serve as a grooved bearing, or are supposed to, but they could be spinning independently?
