Trashy Arbor

Post by JPG »

A while back this sad looking arbor appeared in a thread.(the one on the bottom)

viewtopic.php?p=280624#p280624

So I received it last week.

It somehow acquired the recessed washers and a set screw.

The keyed washer was cupped by a PO gorilla. Squeezing with a vice flattened it. The tab is skewed, but usable.

After wire brushing and some JPW.

The setscrew(on the left) was a cupped type. I will replace it with(on the right) an oval set screw. The copper pipe (pieces) removed.

The nut still would not go all the way on even with excessive filing of the threads where I thought it was binding. I did not think to try a known good nut when I was filing. I 'eventually' did so and discovered known good nuts worked perfectly.(live and learn!)

So chasing the threads with a 5/8-18 tap resulted in the following debris. Almost ALL rust from the root of the nut threads(the cause of the binding).

The bore with the oval set screw is now clear of that copper pipe or whatever.

Food for thought when considering trashing some derelict part.

Nope--use it in good health! (Or pass it on to someone who needs it.)
