You could just buy another miter gauge. They are on eBay all the time. Still, part of the fun is in the fixing. I wouldn't give up quite yet.

That is a 1/8" National Pipe Thread 'screw'. It is tapered both on the 'screw' and the miter gauge.

When wear makes it 'necessary' to advance the 'screw' until the screw refuses to advance, a strip of paper slipped under the bar and extending up both sides provides clamping without gorilla tactics.

Try using a couple of flat head screw drivers in the slot on either side of the screw to force the sides of the bar to open more and maybe the screw will loosen up.

You should be able to get the screw out of the miter bar by relieving the pressure on it. See if you can insert a steel wedge (screwdriver, junk plane iron or chisel, etc.) into the slot into the miter bar, and tap it in until the miter bar spreads a bit more. Then the tapered screw should come out easily. Shopsmith sells replacement screws -- I bought a new one to replace an old balky one a couple of years ago.

The idea to use a screwdriver as a wedge worked! Thanks everyone! Now I only need to purchase a new screw which isn't too difficult (though it may be awhile before SS sends it to me).

Thanks for everyone's help!
