Shopsmith Teknatool Chuck Adapters

Post by miken »

Hi, I have researched this topic and I am still confused. Does Teknatool, or anyone else make a 1 1/2" X 8 TPI chuck adapter? I don't see one on their website, or google. I have read that the type "F" ISNS is supposed to match the Shopsmith 5/8" spindle and has a 1 1/2" thread diameter, but I can't find anything online to support that. Some people say that their Nova chucks are 1 1/2", and others say 1", and Teknatool says their adapter will fit all Nova chucks? What? I must be missing something.

I basically want to do the same as Peterm did in this post: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=9794

I have several 1 1/2" X 8 TPI chucks and faceplates that I could potentially use on the Shopsmith.

Thanks, Mike -

No, that one appears to be a 1 inch X 8 TPI. I am looking for 1 1/2 inch X 8 TPI. Thanks for looking.

Sorry, I get it. Kept reading the numbers wrong each time. Penn State has a 1-1/4" adapter. 1-1/2" adapters seem rare aside from faceplates.

The best adapter that I know about will come at a price......... but then it is the best.

https://bestwoodtools.stores.yahoo.net/ ... dwith.html

Look for shopsmith 5/8 then the 1-1/2 8 tpi. $64.95

I own and now only use the shopsmith 1 x 8 tpi adapter for any work I do using 1 x 8 items. The penn st. adapter that I got was junk and the set screw would come loose just running the adapter without doing any turning. That problem lead me to avoid them for a long while and I still don't like buying lathe tools from them.

The shopsmith adapter will also have the angled set screw just like the nova another reason I like them and it is shorter then the others on the market also a plus.

Yes, that is pricey. I think I will hold out for a Nova chuck instead of trying to retrofit. I was going to try to make one but my machining skills aren't there yet.

Thanks for the info Ed.

I decided to go a different way than peterm when he machined his adapters. Instead of making the adapter with the set screw mount for the SS spindle built in, I made mine so it fits onto the 5/8" Universal Arbor. I was limited on material with enough diameter to cut the 1 1/2"x8tpi threads, thus brass, and the different design. It works well with less than 1/128" of runout, around 0.008". It works with my chucks and the arbor stays within the chuck, but it won't work with a faceplate unless I counterbore a hole in the wood for the arbor nut clearance. It was a good learning experience, but I doubt I will use it much as I think the Nova chuck is a much better option. Anyway, just thought I would share.

Thanks, Mike -
