Re: 1995 Shopsmith 510 Purchase
You can A) try to remove it and replace it(not easy)
......or B) get a new one from SS.
......or C) get a used one on E-Bay.
All is NOT lost!

eBay has a stripped one for $13.00 plus $9.00 Shipping. I'm leaning that way. I want to check with my other guy first and see if he can beat that price.

Re: 1995 Shopsmith 510 Purchase
Okay a few things. First... I think this headstock has been torn down at some point and put back together but not correctly.
First... When I took the quill assembly apart the quill spring housing had the flat surface up and coming into contact with the set screw.
But the one on my 1990 looks like this with the little index up. I also noticed an indent from where a set screw has once been tightened. So I put it together this way.
And then last but not least do I have the domed washer in correctly?
The quill moves in and out but not smoothly. However I didn't have time to wax so that might help but the movement doesn't feel smooth. It's like it turns easy for a half a turn and then it feels tight for a quarter of a turn and then easy again. It's odd. Plus I'm not sure how many times I should wind up the spring before installing the quill. Any thoughts on that would be helpful.
