Repainting a 510
Im going to repaint my 1980 510 top to bottom. With regards to the headstock do I need to completely diassemble the inside? It was overhauled 2 years ago. Can I just tape off the outside speed dial and etc? Thank you.

You 'can'.
I wouldn't.
I prefer completely removing all 'etc.' parts.

Re: Repainting a 510
If you are going to the trouble of repainting your Shopsmith "top to bottom" I would disassemble it for painting. Disassemble the Headstock and all assemblies to paint the individual parts. It may be more work but will look better when you are finished. Do cover with tape way tube, quill, pinion, etc. holes to keep paint off those bare metal surfaces. I restored a 1982 Mark V that I completed repainted and used 3+ cans of the Shopsmith gray paint. It was still the original table system unlike yours which has been upgraded to a 510. If you are going to repaint the painted surfaces of the 510 tables you will need additional paint in either gray or black depending on the age of the tables.

Re: Repainting a 510
The picture below is the same Mark V before it was restored. Taking the extra time and effort can pay off in how it looks and runs when finished. I find that during a restoration having it completely apart makes it easier to find any problem parts that can then be replaced or repaired. Also, it is one of the best times to have everything clean and lubricated as it goes back together.

yes, Disassembling is the best option. I also prefer the same method.
