10e serial numbers

Good morning & hello.

I bought a 10e ( sn# 12910 ) at a flea market & am wondering how old it is. I's in nice condition and appears complete. So far I've only been able to find serial numbers for the V series.

From what I gather it's about 60 years old, but it would be nice to know for certain when it was built.

The 10E was introduced in late 1947. It was updated to the 10ER in 1949. That would put yours as being born in 1948. Amazing, isn't it?

Wow ! Thank you. Built like a tank is an understatement.

What really amazes me is the condition it's in for such an old unit. Although the motor has been replaced the finish looks original with only a few scuffs.

It sure was an exciting 100 mile ride home since I had to redistribute the parts to keep it from bottoming out the car's rear end. Not that it was the only thing stuffed into the Sable. :D Next road trip I'm taking the truck

Don't own a digital camera but will see if I can borrow one this weekend.

The paint appears to be the original 'pale green'.

I don't think pale green was ever a factory color. The Model 10E/ER machines were a bluish gray (grayish blue?) color from the factory. Someone else must have painted it the pale green, but maybe they took their time and did a good job. My two 10ER machines had both been re-painted green, but were quite sloppy paint jobs.

One of the parts (104-6R) has this blue/grey color so that is correct and I was mistaken about it being the original finish. I jumped to that conclusion b/c the apparent age and hue of the green reminds me of a vintage color.

Appreciate the correction. Still waiting for the Yahoo Grouip authorization.

Welcome to the group. Your officially part of an increasing group of ER owners here. Good luck with your machine.

Posting suggestion for you.....when you want to reply to someones post and include their text, first press the "Quote" button at the bottom of their post, then leave their text enclosed in the brackets. That will allow their user name and quote to show up in the white box when you submit your post.

It will look like what is shown below when your replying. I have to intentionally misspell the word "quote" here as "quotte" so you see what I mean. If I didn't, it would show up in a white box and you wouldn't be able to see the meat of it.

[quotte=cg6380]Good morning & hello.........[/quotte]
You then enter your text below it.

Give it a try.

congrats on your machine...I just inherited a Shopsmith S/N 2988(It was my Grandfather's so has now been in the family for 3 generations, but not sure on exact age). needs some replacement parts for the lathe(the live spur) and the drill press(the chuck) and I have no Idea where to begin..but otherwise all in good working order and will see a lot more use
