I can't completely rule that out, but I'm pretty sure that the 1952 machine is in original condition. It came to me with most of the accessories still in the original Shopsmith packaging. A couple had never even been removed from the waxy-tissue-paper wrapping in their boxes. The machine is wearing its original paint with virtually no scratches, scuffs, or chips .. just some splatters from where something else was painted nearby.

While that is possible, if you look at the scratches they are virtually identical and extremely uniform. This from two machines that were built 5 years apart and and are over 60 years old. Unless the same person refurbed both sets of tubes in exactly the same manner (what are the chances of that?) I doubt you would see that kind of uniformity.

I measured the tubes on my other two 10ER's S/N 58365/1951 and S/N 38728/1950 today. They measured 0.203" the same as the one I measured the other day. My MK V drill press and the MK 7 both have 10ER thick tubes but I can't measure them without taking the tie bar off. I think that it is safe to say these measurments are normal for 10ER tubes.

There is an article I found on the Yahoo erdocuments group.
The file is westernmach1.pdf at the bottom of the file page. I tried to upload it here but the file is too big.

Western Machinery and Steel World - January 1951 - Precision Makes the Shopsmith

Page 3 paragraph 3 reads
The machine is made of grey iron
and aluminum castings, hardened steel,
and centerless-ground tubular steel ways,

Well, I guess that settles it. I knew I had heard it somewhere before.

Very strange, when I tried to attach that file I got a message that phpbb had a limit of 2 Mb for .pdf files.
I guess Mom likes you best. :)
