Seeking some ideas (dome light)

Re: Seeking some ideas (dome light)
So this is the smaller version I mentioned. It has a conventional bulb and smaller dome this a smaller base. I went with the inset like the store version and just ruffed it out. The base looks too tall to me so that might be one of the changes I make for the final version.
The hole in the base I drilled in about 5/8" and that seems like it will work.
Since this is a real bulb I'm wondering how hot it will be getting.... The writing was to small/unclear for me to read but I think it is a 40 watt bulb. I had it on for about 20 minutes and the glass was warm but the garage is only 65 degrees, hot summer day well that could be a different story.

Re: Seeking some ideas (dome light)
Suggest a knot for a strain relief.
Will the base not 'look' larger when stained darker?
If anything, it looks 'thick' to me. A shaped edge would 'help' that.
Other than all that - nice!

Re: Seeking some ideas (dome light)
I would bull nose the edge of the disk. That will make it look much smaller. On the next one drill the cord hole below the apex of the bull nose and it will magically disappear. And I agree you need a strain relief, tie a knot in the cord right before it exits the inner cavity.

This is awesome! I am inspired!
Re: Seeking some ideas (dome light)
I got around to turning the second and larger of the two lamp base. Had to sit a few days while waiting for the domes to arrive so I could size it. I used the band saw to free hand the circle then turned it round and have it sanded to 220. Hope to get it over for the persons to look at and then either make my own copy or redo one for them.
One person that saw it wanted me to make some to sell next summer at the local farmers market in town. I don't think I want to get in the business of making these but we will see if they want to make it worth my while and if I have the time....
Back to the subject at hand. Here are some pictures. Got to have pictures right?

Re: Seeking some ideas (dome light)
I like the edging, but what is this light going to be used for, mood lighting, reading, seems a bit direct depending on its brightness.

Greenie, Grayling, SS stand alone BS and BS SPT, jointer and belt sander, 3 Ers with Speed Changers. I think those 3 cover my ER needs, and space for them.

Re: Seeking some ideas (dome light)
Can't speak for the people who wanted it but for me I think this will be ambient lighting in my office. After I get it built and working I'll know if it is going to work for that or not. This bulb is rated at 4.2W and 466 lumens. This one has not even been powered up yet, needs a cord.ERLover wrote:I like the edging, but what is this light going to be used for, mood lighting, reading, seems a bit direct depending on its brightness.
Right now I have a single 11 watt bulb rated at 1000 lumens and it is plenty bright, perhaps a bit to bright so we will see.

Delivered the lamps today. He had yet another bulb to try out. Depending on where you are when looking at it, interesting............
