Small Shop Ideas
Hi All,
I am finally getting serious about organizing and setting up my wood shop.
I am curious about your best small shop ideas. I don't have much free area, most of that is going to be taken up by the space used to roll out my 510. I have a area in the back for my bench and some shelves.
Any ideas and pictures of your solutions would be helpful!

Re: Small Shop Ideas
Sounds like you all ready have a idea of what you are going to do
Plenty of lighting and room to move , maybe portable glue benches?
Seen some nice ones made from pvc tubing that could be dis assembled & stored .

Other things a locking castors so you can move them out of the way when not in use.

The Greatness officially starts
Greenie, Grayling, SS stand alone BS and BS SPT, jointer and belt sander, 3 Ers with Speed Changers. I think those 3 cover my ER needs, and space for them.

Re: Small Shop Ideas
I fit my entire shop into half a 3rd stall garage. These are the key ideas I have used:
-everything on casters
- I use my shopsmith as a base for assembly tables and glue ups. I just have a piece of plywood laying against the wall to protect the shopsmith.
- cabinets on all walls to maximize storage.
- shopsmith cabinet for under the shopsmith to store all is stuff.
- hang clamps off everything (ok sloppy idea but oh well).
- OCD organization of hand tools.
With this stuff I have got an amazing amount of tools into a very small space. Granted I need to move my shopsmith out to do sheet goods. We'll and my planer while using it as well, this the glory of casters.

Did you make the cabinets?
Re: Small Shop Ideas
I thought I would post a couple of pictures of my junk space so maybe you can get an idea or two. Everything is on casters except my work bench. All the walls are covered with steel cabinets. Plenty of lights, air conditioned, fully insulated, double pane glass in the window with storm window, 22 KW generator, It gets pretty crowded when it's so cold I can't push the Mark VII outside. There is a 8' x6' cedar closet in the far end ( Wife's space) that opens into the garage which by the way is fully insulated including the door.
I claim the third car stall less the cedar closet.

Re: Small Shop Ideas
I got the wall cabinets from a neighbor remodeling the kitchen, and build the shopsmith cabinets myself. I have posted on them previously. http://www.shopsmith.com/ss_forum/begin ... 16336.html They have made a world of difference in organizing my shop. Then I built everything around it, including a shelf above it. This way I can keep my stuff accessible but out of the way, allowing me to actually work.Albertt62 wrote:Did you make the cabinets?

Re: Small Shop Ideas
I agree w' another reply about having everything on rollers. Besides the SS & Cart, my workbench is also on lockage casters. Above workbench are mostly hand tools on the wall. Above the SS & cart are shelves for small power tools. Everything in 1 end of single garage stall (about 14 ft x 8 ft.)

Watched 'The Queen's Gambit' and it inspired me to start with the chess boards. What do you think? Is it worth trying?
