Fly Tying Desk

Post by larryhrockisland »

I retired September 1st and I like it! I can go to my shop anytime I want, weather and wife permitting of course. :D My daughter's boyfriend asked for a fly tying station or desk and I had some salvaged materials laying around. We had a student desk that we picked up at a yard sale several years ago for $25.00 and I'm reusing a salvaged oak countertop that I've had for at least 20 years and some oak boards that I saved from an airport remodel last year. The new tying station will cover the original desk top and can be lifted off if desired. I sanded all the old oak and will try to stain it to go with the desk. I believe the desk is made with maple so I know the grain won't match but maybe the color will be close. I'll replace the nails in the last picture with brass rod to hold thread spools. Actually the stain is drying now and I'll add that pic when I get it all back together. All the tool shelves bolt to the top and can be changed out/modified if his tool/material storage configuration changes. All I have had to buy is the brass rod.

This is great! It reminds me of a bigger version of my watch-modding station that I fit on my SS 510.

Well I don't know if it's better to add more pictures to my first post or reply to myself. Anyway I'm done. I'm pretty happy with my stain job, I know it's not a great match but I'm ok with it since everything is reused/repurpose/recycled. I bought 3/16x36" brass rod, cut it into 3" pieces and then rounded the ends chucked up in my powerpro. I really like the slow speed :D .

Looks good, that should make your daughter’s boyfriend very happy!

I know absolutely nothing about fly tying. So should you have the photo opportunity, I’d love to see an action photo of the desk in use, loaded up with supplies.

Very nice. It will keep supplies close at hand with the raised shelves around the edges. The drawers will be a great addition for storing larger supplies. He must have a weighted-base vice he uses since I do not see a mounting spot for one.

They took it home Thanksgiving day. I believe he liked it, he had it moved in and set up in a couple of hours and that included removing a couch and rearranging furniture to make room for the desk. I don't remember saying earlier but the new desk top is 20X41. This concludes everything I know about fly tying and even fishing in general except for eating them. :D
