how much sanding between layers is required or if its necessary at all. Between each coat here-I inspected the surface for defects etc and sanded them
a little with 400 grit paper before proceeding to the next coat.

If you really want a good grounding in finishing, I highly recommend the book Understanding Wood Finishing, by Bob Flexner. I’ve read it through, and refer to it often. It will not only answer your questions, but tell you exactly why. The hardcover version is $25 at Amazon. You can save five bucks with the paperback version, but for a reference book I personally prefer hardcover.
