Scraps project - suggestions
I started trying to work my pile of scraps into something functional. Taking all kinds of small pieces i made 3/4" cross sections
of various lengths from various wood species.
Now-I have a whole bunch of them...kind of assembled like a tabletop...but I have 2 problems.
1) How the heck can I glue them all together and end up with good seams?
2) Once that success is behind me...what can I do with it ?
I thought it would make an interesting tabletop, or wall art but after that I'm all out of ideas. I'm sure you
have some good ideas for me to consider !
Thanks !

And I still intend to do it some day.I'm gonna take all these scraps, glue them together, and do some really nice turning on my Shopsmith lathe.[Ed from New York circa 1994]

Hah- Thanks Ed - I understand the dilemma ...my firepit is full of scraps I haven't burned and my scrap boxes are overflowing.
I'm trying to do something !
The lathe is a thought, but my SS didn't come with lathe tools, nor have I attempted to set it up or learn that function.

Standard usage of small scraps seems to be cutting boards/cheese boards.
Glue em up into some smaller panels using whatever clamps you have to draw things as tight as possible. Clamping cauls made of scrap (even some of the longer pieces in that picture), can be used to extend your clamp's reach and bridge across the panel if you don't have enough long clamps. (Don't forget to wax the caul or put wax paper between the panel and the wood caul or you'll glue your caul to the panel).
If it were me, I'd just use these purple and yellow scraps and do a chess board pattern. First glue up alternating strips of purple and zellow in a zebra pattern, then when the glue is dry, cross cut them them (in your case to 3/4" width because you already have 3/4" stock), then flip every other cross cut strip and reglue.
Process explained here (although these chess squares are much bigger than yours will be). viewtopic.php?p=277254#p277254

Yeah, cutting boards and chess/checker boards are the natural for this. Maybe even a backgammon board. You can make a cutting board with a 3D pattern or other exotic pattern. All those require gluing up a lot of small pieces. Some people manage to clamp them all up at once in a frame. I think I'd have to do a row at a time to get it right.
You also may have enough piece to make a flag with odd coloring. I do like the colors you have and some kind of wall art is an interesting idea. If you have wall mounted lamps or other fixtures you could make some interesting sconces to mount them on.
Hope you can get some lathe tools and a face plate or chuck. If you need a tool holder I have extras and could help you out. It's easy to start some simple turning. When my kids were little we made fruit and little bowls out of cedar for fun, and turned a few spindles just to play.

This just goes to show: There is no such thing as "scraps". They are cut offs pending an application.
