It's news to me

Post by garys »

I'm starting a project for a cabinet. I want this to look special so I'm making it from walnut. I went to my local custom cabinet shop/wood supplier and bought a nice sheet of A1 walnut plywood. When I got home and laid it out on my saw horses, I found that it isn't 48x96". It is actually 48 1/2 x 96 1/2". I guess they are being generous to accomodate me if I chip an edge working with it. It is made in Canada. Thank you folks.

I've run across some sheet material that is slightly oversized like that. As I recall, also got it at a wood supplier rather than big box store.

Same here. Mine is 1/2" red oak, 48-1/2 X 96-1/2". It is also closer to nominal thickness, 0.480. Bought from a wood supplier. (Lowe's says 0.453, about 29/32, for theirs.)

I remember getting S2S common plywood that was regularly 1/4" to 1/2" over-size. That was a long time ago and from a lumber yard. Couple of days ago I cut up a sheet of 1/2" maple plywood from Lowes, it was right on 48" X 96", but their PT 2x4s and 2x6s are often 96-1/2" long.

Today I finished the display cabinet for my Son. I built it from the nice walnut plywood I bought 2 1/2 weeks ago when I started this thread. Now I need to figure out a way to move it to my Son's house 100 miles away. I think the darn thing ended up weighing around 75 pounds. Hauling it out of my basement workshop will be work. Once out, we can put it on my Son's pickup for the drive home. Once he gets it home, the problem of moving it into his house is all his.

The finish is just urethane directly on the walnut.
