Hi,

Limit number of people have these machines but for those that do here is an idea how to get along without the extension table that was once sold as a option to the J-M.

With only going into a lot of detail the concept here works for other things like as it turns out the shopsmith band saw as it was later was shown by Nick

So if you don't own the J-M take a look anyway... strip sander... scroll saw... dare to be creative.

I was interested in buying a Joint Matic (on ebay) this past week but when people started bidding like they did I went to bed. It was incomplete (router plates missing) but the price when through the roof almost instantly despite that. This is not my idea of a good deal.

I do appreciate your photos though, Ed and I still want a Joint Matic. Furthermore, I will have one one day.

Is your Joint Matic just resting on the extension table or is the 2x bolted to something other than the Joint Matic?

The block of wood is mounted to an extension table base. I want to change this a bit so like maybe 1-1/2" of plywood. Yet another project so for now it is on this scrap piece of treated wood. The paper under the J-M at the mounting places can then be done away with as the table can be done on studs and made adjustable.

I have seen a J-M go for as high as $560!!!! The one I have I paid more then I should have for but I wanted one, and no I would never go to anywhere near $500.

The big danger of the version like was on ebay and that I own is the slide can get cracked where the lead screw is. Mine had this problem and the previous owner did a good job repairing it and it seems to be holding but I wasn't sure so I purchased a lightly used replacement.

After you mentioned it I was watching it, then when you said you were going to pass on it I was thinking of it for spare parts for me. The price however went to high for that.

Wouldn't Woodhaven's Horizontal Router Table make a reasonable replacement?

Yes, it certainly would. Especially at the price.

How about the MLCS version? It's about 40% less than the Woodhaven unit. Is it a 'get what you pay for' kind of deal?

You know, these don't look like they would be hard to build at all. The hard part would be finding some sort of track (the vertical supports) to move the router plate up and down on.

A pair of 520 front rails would work great. Problem is they are almost as expensive as the rigs that have been referenced here.

This is the home made version for use with joint-matic. Later I'll show you the real one. They are very hard to find, it took me about 2 years of searching and these have gone for over $100 several times on ebay!!

This was a prototype but now that I have a real one I'll just use that.

Ed (or any jointmatic users) - could you post some photos of the raising mechanism? I thought I took some, but can't seem to find them. Just want to get this bad boy back into normal working order....which means getting the parts in the right order ;)

Think smaller. Think RAS rails. 3/8" round rod(mounted to sides) and curved face casters on the slide(or pairs mounted at an angle to form a 'v'..

Thanks ed. I need detail photos of the raising mechanism. ie: a shot from the back of the unit with the handle and the rod.

I want to make sure I get the nuts and such in the right order, and make sure I am not missing a washer or anything.

Where is the wave washer on yours?

Picture one shows the crank with slide sleeve, then (larger) black nylon washer.

Picture two show the underside starting with the (smaller) black nylon washer, washer (not on parts list) , hex nut, and jam nut.

Picture three shows the spring washer, it is on top of the bushing nut, the adjusting nut was turn way up so you can see the washer. When adjusted the washer is hidden.

The forth and last shot of this post shows the bushing nut. Please note that the slidee you see is a repaired one. A former user did the repair and so far it has held up. To be on the safe side I purchased another one just in case. This was the down fall of the Joint-matic I think, Slide should have been made of metal or they should have used the original dual drives...

Anyway make sure you get that adjustment set per the manual.

Awesome. This is super helpful. So if I am understanding the repair shot correctly, the issue there is that the plastic can be weak and while cranking up/down if there is any binding the table will break there. Correct?

I think the problem has to do with the way the machine is used in some operations. If you trap the workpiece between the table and the bit the weak link is the attachment spot on the slide.

I personally haven't have that happen but I have seen a fair number of machines for sale that had the slide broken, so it does happen.
