Cutting Board

Post by algale »

The wife requested a huge cutting board. This is 18” x 25” x 1.38” thick. All end grain on the cutting surface. Walnut and maple with one coat of mineral oil.

Finished just in a nick of time.

I guess I should say something about the role the Shopsmith played in this project. After jointing and planing the stock (non-Shosmith) it was virtually all Shopsmith from there. The Shopsmith band saw with a Shopsmith edition Kreg Fence ripped the maple to 1.5" wide strips. Three 24" Shopsmith double bar clamps clamped the blank up into a zebra pattern. Then the zebra pattern blank was cross cut (again Shopsmith band saw/Shopsmith Kreg fence) into 1.38" strips. Those strips are stood up to expose the end grain and alternate strips flipped to get the checkerboard.

Because the length (25") was too much to do in one fell swoop with the Shopsmith bar clamps, I glued them up in two checkerboards and then, after using the Shopsmith conical disc sander to true up the edges, glued the two boards together to get the 25" length using regular pipe clamps.

Random orbit (Festool) sander on the top to sand out imperfections.

End grain cutting boards use a lot of wood, obviously.

It is beautiful, but more work than I would attempt. I made a large one some years back, but I was too lazy to make something as nice as yours. I simply used maple boards.
That is a board to be proud of.

Nice Job!

I have made a few, but nothing as big and complex as this. Congratulations.

Beautiful Cutting Board to which my wife agrees too. She said you must love your wife a lot to put all that work into it.

Thee are fortunate to have a better half that understands the amount of effort and skill required to make that cutting board.
