Need advice on replacing belts

Post by hwwilson »

I am a new owner of a '91 Mark V (510). I am just learning about my new machine. Not sure what I have so I have been using the various modes and checking it out. I decided to do a little lathe work and noticed that the housing was getting pretty warm. Then I heard a some noice that made me uncomfortable. A metal scraping noice. Took of the cover and noticed that the poly-v belt is frayed and partly shredded on each side. So, it's time for a replacement. I figure I will replace the drvie belt as well. My question is, should I do any other routine maintenance at this time? Is there something else I should buy and replace? Are there any instructions on this? What can I expect? Can I even do this job? What do you think this metal noice is? Why is the housing getting warm is is this normal? All advice/suggestions appreciated. I already know that I like this machine and I am happy with my purchase.
Thanks,
Howard

Hi Howard,

Welcome to this forum. There are a lot of knowledgeable and experienced SS users here. Your questions will be welcome and hopefully answered in a way that will help you. Check out this link about changing your belts. http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/productmanuals/PolyV_GilmerBelt_Replacement.pdf You should be able to do this yourself. There is help for you via the SS technical helpline also. If you provided your general location, an SS user close to you may be able to help. You may want to do some internal cleaning and lubrication while you have the covers off. This link may help you with some of the maintenance items http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/servicetips/index.htm .

Need Advice On Replacing Belts

It's hard to tell what you might need without being able to see. You'll have to do that. Since you have to get deep inside to replace the belt, you'll have a good opportunity to inspect.

Please take some time and view this:

I think this might help. If you don't have a user's manual, you need to get one. In the meantime _
