Sand disc paper not sticking

Post by tom85 »

 The problem i have is fairly minor but annoying. I've read with how to remove the old sand paper and had no problems using my oven. The problem is getting the new sand paper to stick all the way around. I put it on it and it looked great, the next day the edges were pulled up. I did wipe down the disc without any solution to remove dust prior to applying the new paper, i'm curious about top canadian casino games https://yuzoolapps.com/ if that is my problem.

Without using your sandpaper on your disks in your environment, your question is impossible to answer. However, is your sand paper fresh. I have some that is not and I have a similar experience here. I know for a fact that if the disk is not clean sandpaper won't adhere reliably.

I'm very interested in hearing comments on this, especially from some are using recently purchased sand paper.

On the flip side, when your sandpaper gets old (I bought a bunch on sale - bad move) don't expect it to adhere without some special effort.

I have the same problem, but I know the reason why mine doesn't stick. My unused sandpaper dates back to when my Shopsmith was new in the early 80s. That 40 year old glue just doesn't work like it should anymore.

Yes old glue is not what it use to be. I too have had that problem, over buying to save money, well not such a good idea with some sand papers. Also old belt seem to have the seam fail a lot sooner then you expect.

If the paper comes off clean you can simply put a new one on, but if the previous paper lifted or was damaged then the disk will likely need to be cleaned before putting on a new paper. Remember this is a pressure adhesive so just sticking it on may not be enough........

If the disks are new then I would look at how you cleaned them. There is a sticky residue so any time you dry wipe them you more then likely contaminated the surface. A good cleaning should be done so you are back to metal. Mineral spirits or the like depending on your preferences can be used to do that.

I've also had issues with the conical disks loosing adhesion which I have contributed to living in a cold garage shop, 33.5 degrees this morning.....

You can use the 3M spray adhesive, (forgot the #) to attach the paper, I have had to do that several times over the years.

I solved the problem by by using c-clamps and a pressure plate. Works great and had no issues with the paper coming unglued.

Only thing that comes to my mind is the disc is not clean or the glue did not adhere to the disc , can you describe your process in a little more detail ? Once installed do you use a dowel or anything to roll it down on the disc to remove any air ? do you sand with it immediately? do you add any heat to it ? what did you wipe the disc down with to clean it etc ? I have used a hair dryer on the disc after installing the new paper , especially in the winter ? I never put my disc in the oven???? a clean putty knife or paint scraper will clean any debris off the disc and a bit of thinner or alcohol or spirit should clean the disc , anything that leaves a residue on the disc can / will cause issues .JMO

The sandpaper disks were several years old and the glue wasn't sticking. I cleaned the disk with lacquer thinner, put on the disk, rolled over it with a rolling pin but the next day it had popped up on the edges. This was done last summer. I then made the pressure plate, clamped it overnight with c-clamps and even in this cold weather it still holds. BTW these were not Shopsmith disks; just some I found on sale at a local tool store.
