Mark V 500 Table Saw Upgrade

Post by dldeford »

I have a 30 year old Mark V 500 and would like to upgrade the table saw but don't know if I want to spend the money for the upgrade kit. I've noticed table hardware on ebay, does anyone know what is needed to upgrade the 500 to a 510 or 520?

Main table, carriage, rip fence, three aux/floating tables, miter gauge bar, upper/lower saw guard, connecting tubes, telescoping legs with right angle, tool rest, tool rest post, sanding disk hub, saw arbor for starters.

Often only the tables are listed with/without the carriage and fence.

Going to a 510 only made sense before the 520 came along.

it might be cheaper to just buy a 510 off of craigslist in your area.
that way you have a backup unit, if you have the room for it.

I agree with JPG. I did a 500 to 520 upgrade via Ebay about 3 years ago. Here's a summary of my upgrade purchases. It includes basically everything listed by JPG. Note that SS list prices shown were valid 3 years ago and that my purchase prices reflect my winning bids. Competition back then was fairly stiff and the selection seemed to be better than I've observed recently. (Sorry about the jumble of numbers - tabs not handled.)

You'd be crazy to purchase all these items ala-carte from Shopsmith. The upgrade kit is $1321.68 for the 500 to 520 upgrade. Sure, that's $450 more coming from the ms, but may be worth it to someone to get new parts and no hassle with eBay or CL. Of course that doesn't include shipping, but you might be able to get in on one of their free or $10 shipping deals they do once in a while.
