Re: Lathe Chucks
I bought the G3 shopsmith bundle from amazon. Works great, very pleased. Good price too!

Re: Lathe Chucks
From looking at the description for the Anniversary bundle it is not compatible with the SS. The one in the bundle is threaded, the SS needs a 5/8" plain bore to fit on the quill.geocaljr wrote:I have inherited a SS Mark V and am researching chucks for small bowl & plate turning. The Nova G3 Chuck 30th Anniversary bundle looks like a good deal, but is this particular chuck adaptable to the SS? I’m a little confused about insert and reversible chucks. Is this bundle only for Nova lathes?

The 'shopsmith adapter' converts from 1 x 8 TPI to 5/8 smooth bore.

Re: Lathe Chucks
JPG, what adapter are you talking about? The Nova adapter I have for my G3 chuck is 1 5/16", I am not sure about the TPI but it may be 8. I know the description for the Anniversary bundle that I found online at Rockler states: " Though designed for the Nova Comet II Midi Lathe (#46457, sold separately), it can be used on any lathe with a 1'' x 8 TPI thread. This is not an insert style chuck. Cannot use an insert/adapter to change the threading."JPG wrote:The 'shopsmith adapter' converts from 1 x 8 TPI to 5/8 smooth bore.

IIUC ISNS A 1" x 8 TPI thread is on the outside that mates to the chuck internal thread.thunderbirdbat wrote:JPG, what adapter are you talking about? That seems to contradict the later 'cannot' sentence.

Re: Lathe Chucks
The ISNS adapter would be too large to fit the chuck in the anniversary bundle. I measured my ISNS insert threaded end at 1 5/16" with maybe 8 TPI as I did not measure the threads, hence why they state it cannot be used with this chuck. There may be some other company that makes an insert 5/8" plain bore to 1" 8 TPI but I do not know.

Re: Lathe Chucks
As Brenda said, there are three different versions of the G3 chuck, one direct threaded 1"x8TPI, one direct threaded M33, and one that takes inserts.

Re: Lathe Chucks
Interesting as 1 5/16 converts to about 33 mm, that may be the insert size and I was slightly off on my measurement as my ruler was in 32nds. 1 5/16" = 33.3375 mm 1 19/64" = 33.29921 mm 1 9/32" = 32.5438 mm The brochure/manual for the G3 also lists a 3/4" 16 TPI direct thread option for the G3 chuck.rpd wrote:As Brenda said, there are three different versions of the G3 chuck, one direct threaded 1"x8TPI, one direct threaded M33, and one that takes inserts.

Re: Lathe Chucks
Thanks for everyone's input. I'm surmising that the 30th Anniversary bundle is NOT appropriate for the SS and that I would require an insert type G3 with the 5/8" ISNS adaptor.
