Did you cut the tubes at 9.25 also? Whatever you did turned out looking great. Nice work.
Re: Shorty dedicated drill press
Yes, 9 1/4". You can see how short they appear in my picture and the picture from benmcn. It really is all that is needed for the smaller table.

Re: Shorty dedicated drill press
For bench tubes THAT short electrical EMT(1 1/2"?) should suffice. I would plug the ends to prevent the clamps crushing them.

Re: Shorty dedicated drill press
My bench tubes for this build are 18". That is what I cut off to make a shorty (mostly a sanding station). The full length way tubes are 10ER full thickness tubes I got on eBay.chapmanruss wrote: ↑Tue Apr 27, 2021 11:57 am There are two differences between the bench and way tubes besides the length. The first Ed covered above. The other is the finish of the tubes. Early bench tubes were painted and later chrome plating was used. Way tubes are polished metal.
It sounds like you want to set it up as a Drill Press similar to what John Burger has done. Below is a link to a thread he showed it in. The bench tubes are quite short so you wouldn't loose much cutting off the needed section from a pair of way tubes for the bench tubes. Or you could use the current way tubes the way they are and cut the needed lengths for the bench tubes from one of your extra tubes. That way you keep your 4 original tubes intact.
