I had a cat that started scratching the couch. I made a scratching post from a 4' length of 4x4 western red cedar fence post screwed to a plywood base. When the cat would start scratching the couch, I pick her up and hold her beside the post so she would grab on, then I would let go. She soon started scratching the post and leave the couch alone.

I'd try this, but with current Western Cedar prices I think I will get the cats a couch! :D

No doubt. That was back in the early 90's, prices were better then. :)
I suspect any soft wood 4x4 would work. When I see the carpet covered cat posts, it makes me think they are just training the cat to scratch carpet or fabric.

I'm waiting to see the cat taking after that scratching post! :)

Dusty, It will come. Work and life has gotten in the way of completing it (oh, and the picking up of a “new” Power Stand with Jointer).

Reminds me of my favorite display plate my devout So. Illinois Christian grandmother had hanging on the wall of her dining room; it said, “I’m not a Fast Cook, I’m not a Slow Cook, I’m a Half-Fast Cook.”

That seems to be me as a woodworker.

I finally finished the cat scratching post!!’ Only had a couple of distraction projects slow me down. Now I can get back to my original project, the two fine walnut keyboard shelves for the walnut standing desks I put together last year. Well, my school project may delay me some, but I’m hoping most of the work on that can be done in class.

I used a walnut stain on the end caps, and then 5 coats of a wiping poly over everything.

And great news!!! The cat has launched herself into it and climbed around it, and it has proven to be very stable. It was fun to watch. I’ll get a photo one of these days, and hopefully a short video, and I’ll post it when I have it.

It looks great, Marc! I didn’t realize that a cat post could actually be attractive.

Now what can you do for a litter box?
