Camphor Tip?

Hello folks -

Today, while watching the Sawdust Session (my first live one!), Drew told me to look up the "camphor tip" on the SS website after I asked him about protecting the tools against a moist environment. I have looked everywhere I can think of for the tip and have done keyword searches with no joy. Anybody have any idea what he was talking about or can someone point me toward the tip?

Sure it's not Camelia oil? That's the traditional Japanese rust preventative for tools.

OK, checked Wikipedia and found that solid blocks of camphor emit fumes that form a rust preventing coating.

Didn't look for a source for either.

You are at the correct session but I believe the wrong segment. Until the video index is fixed, you can use the file I had set up listing all the sessions. I did it in Excel but could only post it in text format. You can copy it and convert it to Excel for easier sorting.

Camphor. Thta's what Blue Star Ointment is. Used for jock itch, among other things. Back in my Navy days, it came in a little plastic bottle. You could probably fit it into a tool box. Wonder if it would work?

Hi Barb - Although I don't live in an area where there is a need to worry about moisture, that concern was every day when living near the Gulf coast in Texas. I started saving those little silica gel desiccant (actually crystals)bags that come in electronics and pills. I throw them in with my router bits. Have never had a problem with rust or corrosion on those bits, although once a week I had to re-wax the belt sander table. Exposed shafts on the bandsaw and sander also started to rust.

It IS camphor...an old tool-&-die-guy trick. It usually comes in 2" square "tablets" that are available at most pharmacies. Cheap and very effective at rust prevention...with fumes that turn into a protective coating on metal tools.

Works best when used in closed drawers or cabinets.

Are the ones that SS offers made in the USA? They look identical. I wood think that they are the same units.

BTW, the ones offered by hartville tool are advertised as made in USA.
