In the last video, we covered the greasing of the upper wheel of the Shopsmith bandsaw, which in my experience is among the most easily forgotten maintenance of the bandsaw. In this follow-up, we'll answer some of the questions about that process and show how to remove the lower wheel and bearing assembly. Here's that previous video: https://youtu.be/H1YPHGeYYC8

0:00 - Intro
0:26 - What about the bottom wheel bearing?
0:40 - Welcome new subscribers!
0:55 - No towels for you!
1:14 - Danger in using degreaser?
2:20 - You aren't alone if you've never greased the upper wheel bearings!
3:10 - Where's "Shaft"?
3:25 - What about replacing the bandsaw tires?
5:10 - Magnetic base LED sewing machine lights?
6:15 - Lubricate the blade guides?
7:14 - Link to needle bearings?
7:40 - Prepping for removal of the lower wheel & bearing
8:37 - Remove bearing retainer with 1/2" open-end wrench
9:50 - Tapping on the shaft with a rawhide mallet
10:14 - Examining the bearing assembly (water pump bearing assembly)
12:28 - A case for owning a rawhide mallet

LINKS to products that were used and discussed in this video (in no particular order):
- Scott's favorite rawhide mallet: https://amzn.to/3g3RhJR Garland makes several sizes but the No. 4 has the best size for weight ratio for
woodworking.
- Here's the needle bearing. Remember, you'll need two: https://amzn.to/33y6IoG
- Scott's favorite double-ended wrench: https://amzn.to/3gYAMgM
- Here's an Amazon link to the SpecTape that I use for temporary bonds: https://amzn.to/3jk023k
- Here's an Amazon link to the FastCap SpeedTape that I use for permanent bonds: https://amzn.to/3jhCiN6

The jury is out on which of these replacement bandsaw tires I will ultimately prefer, but if you need to get going on replacing your bandsaw tires, I will be installing and testing the orange tires from Shopsmith.com and the "Blue Max" tires from Amazon: https://amzn.to/3o2LPcM

Upgrading the Shopsmith Quill Lever to a Quick-Release Multi-Position Lever Handle. Is It Worth it?

Scott's Shopsmith Mark V's quill handle was ruined recently when the headstock took a dive off his Workmate, so after some encouragement in a video comment from John Rice, Scott took the opportunity to upgrade to Geoffrey Baker's "Quick Release Quill Feed Handle Kit". Geoffrey's been showing this kit on his Youtube channel and on the Shopsmith Owners Group on Facebook and in the Shopsmith Forums, and Scott didn't fully understand what was included in the $125 price, so he reached out to Geoffrey for answers. What Scott learned was the kit isn't just your choice of whether the single handle or the three-handle configuration as it first appeared, but rather you get:
- One 12" long lever with quick release hub,
- One 8" three-handle with quick release hub,
- Two 19- spline hub adapters that stay attached to the headstock.

Once Scott learned what was included he decided that it was worth a closer look. Don't forget to leave your questions, comments, and Cheapshots in the video comments and we'll address them during our mid-week video.

0:00 - Intro
1:26 - A few quill handle options
4:00 - Geoffrey Baker's "Quick Release Quill Feed Handle Kit"
5:17 - What's included in the kit?
6:11 - How the quick-release hub works
7:07 - Yep, Scott boogered it!
8:55 - How much further does it stick-out? (Part 1)
9:16 - Wiggle & jiggle®
10:13 - How much further does it stick-out? (Part 2)

I’m curious what others who own this quill handle kit think of it when not drilling. I’m planning on leaving the single handle on, but leaving it on the back of the headstock. Hey, and what happened to “Sup Chad”? Scott

I like the 10 position RE magnet handle from SS over the original handle. With 2 hubs, moving the handle out of the way from front to back of headstock is great and fast.

This aftermarket one just looks too big for what I do.

Scrapwood Reindeer

Post by Chad »

Since Scott has done so many great videos on the Shopsmith bandsaw; Nick Engler posted a great bandsaw project video earlier today. It's also posted on Nick Engler's Workshop Companion youtube channel & website thread, here on the forum, viewtopic.php?f=7&t=23891. I hope Scott doesn't mind if I post this on his thread as well. It's a quick and easy project. Just in time for the holidays. Check it out!

Get the patterns for these reindeer sculptures from our store at:

https://workshopcompanion.selz.com/item ... USYPRRQ4uE

Nick shows how to make a deer with just a few quick cuts on a band saw. It’s a handy technique called “compound cutting” and it can be used to make all sorts of three-dimensional shapes. These particular reindeer are sized so you can cut them from scraps of 2x4s. Or, glue up blocks from different species of scrapwood.

If you miss these you are missing a wealth of information that takes years of experience to duplicate.

I followed Nick from the days of the first Hands On magazine, until today. The early Hands on magazines were handed out at Shopsmith demo's, collected a complete set that was a lot of Demo,s 🥴

Chad, Nick is always welcome. All I want to know is, why is his bandsaw so high? Scott

Great question. I wondered that myself. Still can't come up with a plausible answer.
