Removing & Lubricating a Shopsmith Mark V Headstock & V-Belt (Critical 25 Hour Run-Time Maintenance)

Post by Chad »

Every 25 hours of run-time your Shopsmith Mark V's headstock needs to be oiled in two places. This can be done with the headstock on the machine, but to make this a little easier to film and to show how easy it really is to remove for more in-depth maintenance, we'll go ahead and pull the headstock off. While it's off we'll pull the V-Belt, just to show how easy that is, for the day when you'll eventually need to replace yours.

Products used in this video (in no particular order):
- Here's the oil I use to lubricate the sheaves: https://amzn.to/32IkpAQ
- "Shopsmith Toolbox" AKA: Long 5/32 Inch Cushion Grip Hex T-Handle T-Key Allen (hex) wrench: https://amzn.to/3n5iezc

I was wondering why the arthritis in my knuckles was acting up and then I remember the workout they got from that stupid floating sheave! Just goes to confirm to me that this new-to-me Mark V wasn't very well taken care of. It has a good home now, though. Scott

Basically opened the boxes and assembled it. Never setup or aligned properly. Never oiled or cleaned. Maybe waxed? "This thing won't cut right, it's a piece of junk! Sell it."

Then Mr. Tool-Hunter comes along...

What all did it come with, besides the basic machine, if you don't mind me asking, Scott?

This 520 came with about half of the standard components, such as the tie bar guard, the drill chick and key, wrenches, etc. were missing. It also had a jointer and a bandsaw, which both were a mess! You may also notice that not only was the jointer covered in rust and with a loose fence rail but the tables on the Mark V itself have big patches of some form or tarnish. It's not consistent, so I suspect he left a wet rag or something on it. Slowly but surely I'm bringing it back, though. Scott

I'm still searching for a 510. It'd been nice it came with a bandsaw and jointer. A 50th. anniversary model would be great to own. The closest I came to buying one was a 505, 50th anniversary model with a bandsaw and jointer, and was about 5 hours from home. Doing the math I just couldn't justify it. I passed on it, and not too regrettably now that I think back about it.
